Edson residents will soon be able to do something they haven’t been able to do – beverage container recycling outside the home.

Up to now people had to throw their beverage containers in the same container as their garbage. That will soon change thanks to officials at the Town of Edson and at the Edson and District Recycling Society.

Thanks to a $25,000 grant secured through the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation’s (ABCRC) Community Champions Program the society has secured 23 beverage-recycling containers. The containers will be located in high traffic areas throughout town.

“Seven will be placed around the soccer fields and at a couple of schools,” Edson and District Recycling Depot manager Anne Auriat said.

The containers at the soccer fields will be dual-stream – one side will be for garbage, while the other side will be for depositing beverage containers.

The remainder of the containers – the single-stream type – will be located throughout town beside existing garbage containers, Auriat said.

She said the ABCRC is trying to encourage more beverage container recycling away from home. “That is part of the stream that is not being recovered.”

Auriat said currently 84 per cent of beverage containers in the province are being recycled. The rest are going to landfills. Even though 84 per cent is an excellence statistic the ABCRC believes the bar can be set even higher.

Auriat is looking at future grants that will help the depot secure even more beverage container recycling bins. She said the bins, which will be stored at the depot, will be lent out to user groups hosting events.

The beverage container bins in town will be emptied either by town employees or recycling depot students, Auriat said.
